One Day

A young man with joyful
Soft eyes and dark skin,
Sat with a blanket
Draped about himself.
He looked at me confidently,
As we discussed life.
A man like him,
A rarity in his neighborhood.
His words difficult to understand,
But he had a soothing voice of a lamb.

No motivation,
A dropout,
Young mom,
No job,
Lived with grandma,
Jailed once,
Warrant now,
A whole life ahead of himself.

Sirens zoomed by,
I continued my work.

As I walked to church I saw
Money handed, a bag given.
“Yo, your friend just got picked up by the 5-0.”

I sat and waited.
“Next batch.”
I peered through metal holes,
And could barely make out an image
But I heard the lamb
We talked of family, friends, love, and God.
Does he understand,
The hurt he caused to family and friends?

Letters come
And letters of hope go out.

One Day.
